When the Christmas season becomes a nightmare

For many, the run up to Christmas is a magical time all about the happy social events, colourful decorations and Christmas shopping. The hustle and bustle is par for the course and contributing to a magical time for many.

But, what if all of the extra lights, colours, decorations or busy places triggered dizziness? When this is the case, the festive goodwill can turn to festive torture.

With the things which make the season magical for many being someone else’s worst nightmare.

Visual vertigo comes under the umbrella term of Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD) – not a term I particularly like – where people experience dizziness from visual stimulation, movement and other individual triggers.

Many health professionals put the symptoms down to anxiety and stress – although these are often concurrent with the condition, rarely are they the pure cause. Simply put, there is a mismatch somewhere between the vestibular-ocular system and the brain leading to confusion and ultimately dizziness.

Thankfully, the condition is becoming more recognised in its own right and our understanding of it is improving. More importantly, with the right approach and exercises it can be successfully treated.

If you, or someone you know, will be having a hard time with the lights, decorations, wrapping paper and/or busyness this Christmas, get in touch to see how the Dizziness, Balance & Concussion Centre can help.
